Southwest Florida’s most popular variety of St. Augustine, Floratam was developed in 1972 by the State of Florida and Texas A&M Experiment Stations to be chinch-bug resistant. It is the most drought-tolerant of St. Augustine grasses and features wider and longer leaf blades. In a study comparing warm season turfgrass, Floratam achieved Excellent ratings for shoot color, turgidity, and uniformity.
It needs direct sunlight — at least 6 hours per day — and should be mowed to a height of 3-4 inches once established.
